Plein air quick studies
are done in the same manner as other plein air studies or paintings only
they are done even quicker. They do not include finishing touches
such as edge control or even covering the entire canvas with paint.
A quick study could be done for any number of reasons including the
following: To test a composition, to determine vertical or
horizontal formatting of a scene, to quickly lay out shadow patterns, to
test color options or harmonies, and on and on and on. You could say
that if you really like a scene and know you want to do a large studio
painting you could do several quick studies testing various theories you
may have about the best way to go about the painting. Quick studies
are usually the smallest of the plein air paintings being from 4" x 6" to
8" x 10". You could also say that the quick study or studies should
come directly after a thumb nail sketch of the anticipated scene and
before a larger plein air or studio painting.
